Good Food. Good Drinks. Good Service. But If You Can’t Take The Heat – Stay Out of The Kitchen. Because Consistency Is Key!

We Had The Fish And Chips The First Time, And Because They Were So Good We Had Them The Second Time Too (Earlier This Year). And Because They Were So Good The Second Time We Requested A ‘Doggie Bag’ (Come ‘Doggie Box’) To Take Home What We could Not Finish Them At The Time (The Portions Are Satisfactorily Filling). It Made For A Nice Snack The Next Day. (Looking Closely One Can See Our Chopping Board Is Sitting On Top of The Said Doggie Box. Only Thing Missing There Was A Little Sticker To Keep The Box Sealed Shut. No One Want’s One’s Partially Eaten Meal Running Riot In One’s Handbag.)
What We Especially Appreciated, Including The Third Time We Went, Which Is When We Had The (Cheese & Bacon) Burger, Is That The Chef Cooked Our Food Well Done On All Three Occassions (As Requested) Without Ruining It By Burning It (Which Some Places Do). It Made It All The More Tasty As They Did Well Done Perfectly. Compliments To The Chef. Especially As Our Companion Does Not Like Their Food Well Done And Were Also Happy With Their Non-Well-Done Meal.
‘Consistency’ Is Something He’s Focused On As The New Management. He’s Right of Course And The Need To Do So Chimes In With Our Recent Experience.
For Instance On An Earlier Occassion This Year (Before Meeting Him) The Pub Was Promoting Cocktails So We Decided To Give Them A Go (See Sparkly Picture In The Photo Gallery Directly Below). The First Cocktail We Decided On (After Much Deliberation) Was A Peachy One. Sadly After Ordering Our Choice (In Response To Their Promotion) It Was Not To Be As They Did Not Have The Monin Peach Syrup Which Was An Essential Component.
(For Example See @monin_europe; monin1912.com @monin_europe)
Disappointed We Ordered A Similar Sounding Alternative. An Essential Ingredient For That One Was Out of Stock Too. So That Was Disappointment Number Two.
Finally, Now Double Disappointed And Hoping For Third Time Lucky We Ordered A Spiced Rum With Mixer (Either Coke or Lemonade). Astonishingly That Too Was Unavailable As The Mixer Guns Were Apparently Broken.
The Tequilla Shots Department Were Also A Disappointment. The Pub Had A Great offer On. Three For £6.00 (Which Seemed Like A Bargin As A Single Shot Was The Best Part of A Fiver). However The Shot Glasses Were So Horribly Small And Plastic They Barely Looked Enough To Constitute A Standard Single Measure.
It’s A Sorry Tale! Definitely Room For Improvement There And With Regard To Stocking Up The Cocktail Ingredients, Proper Meansures And Maintaining Bar Equipment. But As We Say, That Was Before Luigi’s DAy.
On Our Third Visit, After The Theatre We Were Drawn into Staff Politics Which We Did Not Appreciate As It Meant Our Dessert Order Was Not Made And Nor Was That Failure To Make It Communicated To Us Until After We Chased It Up Having Patiently Waited For Some Time. Prior To Going Into The Theatre We Told The Bar Supervisor That We Would Have Our Desserts Aftewards As We’d Run Out of Time BeforeThe Show Started And She Said That Was Fine.
After The Show There Was A Rush At Bar Where Only One Bar Person Was Visibly Serving. An off-Duty Member of Staff Who Was Hanging Out Took Our Dessert Order For Which We Were Grateful. We Never Saw Him Again Though. After Waiting Some Considerable Time We Made Enquiries of The Young Man Who Had Appeared To Be Serving All Alone. He Went To Check And Then Came Back And Told Us The Kitchen Was Now Closed.
We Explained To Him That Firstly We Told The Supervisor Earlier That We Would Have Our Desserts After The Show (So At That Point The Kitchen Should Have Been Put On Notice), Secondly We Ordered The Dessert Before The Kitchen Closed. Thirdly Having Ordered And Waited For The Desserts Nobody Told Us They Would Not Be Forthcoming. Fourthly To Add Insult To Injury We Saw The Chef Behind The Bar A Little While Later (During A Subsequent Conversation With The Supervisor). It Really Was Amateur Hour.
The Supervisor’s Explantion Was That The Person Who Took Our Order Should Not Have Done So As They Were off Duty. Naturally We Replied That This Had Nothing To Do With Us As Punters. And At The Very Least Someone Should Have Let Us Know At The Time If A Decision Had Been Made That Our Dessert Order Would Not Be Forthcoming Due To Their Office Politics. Up Until Then All Had Been Well As The Staff Are Usually Very Friendly And Accomodating. But This Was Supremely Annoying. To Her Credit The Supervisor Could See That We Were Right And The Desserts Were Eventually Sorted Out. We Were Thankful For That As It Had Been A Good Night.
A recent Salesforce State of the Connected Customer report Found That 88% of consumers Said That they Were more likely to make another purchase after a positive customer service experience. This Supports Luigi’s Business Theory.
Problems In Life Will Always Arise. But The Essential Thing Is How Willing And Well-Meaning People Are At Finding Agreeable Reasonable Solutions To Them. Overall We Got The Impression That The Staff Care And This Was Unlikely To Happen Again, Which Is Important. Public Relations And Crisi Management Can Make A Big Difference. We Hope It Doesn’t Happen Again Because Frankly We Like It There. The View of The World Going By In The Raised Seating Area In Front of The Bar Is Strangely Relaxing And Comforting. There’s A Nice Friendly Atmosphere That Says Everyone’s Welcome.

When We Visited Luigi Was In The Midst of Overseeing The Installation of Sky Sports On The Pub’s Four Large Televisions Located In Different Sections of The Venue, As Part of The Upgrade. There’s One In The Pool Area At The Side of The Bar. One At The Other End of The Bar In The Main Lower Level That Runs Across The Whole Front Section of The Pub. One In The Cosy Lounge Room Towards The Back of The Pub. And A Very Impressive Built-In, Insulated, Covered And Protected Large Screen In The Beer Garden Next Door To The Aforementioned Cosy Lounge Room.
The Greene King Group Is Big On Its Live Sports And Sports Collaborations So It Was Something of A Surprise To Hear From Luigi That This Is The First Time The Live Sky Sports Service Has Been Available At This Particular Site. Nonetheless The Main Thing Is It’s Here Now And Going Forward Customers Can Now Enjoy Regular Sky Sports TV At This Local Pub. This Includes Screening of This Year’s Up And Coming Wimbledon Tennis Championships (Monday June 30th – Sunday July 13th 2025) Which We Asked About Especially As Big Tennis Followers.

In 2023 The Brockley Jack Theatre (aka Jack Studio Theatre) Won The London Pub Theatres Best Production Award For Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol.
(See Below Our Seperate Review In This Month’s Issue of The One Man Play ‘Macready! Dickens’ Theatrical Friend’ Written And Performed By Mark Stratford, Staged This February. (We Gave It Four Out of Five Stars.) It’s A Great One Man Period Play Which Would Have Been Five Stars But For The Lack of Attention To A Certain Important Historical Detail. Mark Is Pictured In The Cosy Lounge Room With Some of The Characters Included In His Play And One Who Was Excluded And Erased. (Hopefully Mark Sill do A Little Re-Write). The Teaching And Inclusion of Black History Remains Ever Important.
It’s A Cosy 50 Seater Theatre And Once Again, We Look Forward To Returning In The Near Future.
