The Saying Goes “If You Want A Job Doing Well…D.I.Y!” And That Concept Is At The Heart of The BBR Awards.
And Yet Also, Paradoxically, Huw & Lorraine Bellot, The Founders of The Black Business Excellence Event, Believe The Way To Achieve That Is By Working Together, Strategically, Transparently And Collaboratively, In Order To Achieve Optimal Results.
Virtually Four Decades Ago, In 1985, Huw Bellot, Was Involved In The Compilation of Inaugural Black Business Directory. 38 Years Later His Organisation, Black Business Recommendation (BBR) (On Facebook) Which He Now Runs With His Wife Lorraine, And Has Over 11,000 Business Members, Launched The Inaugural BBR Black Business Excellence Awards 2023. It Would Be Fair To Say It Looks Like The Man Has A Consistent, Passionate And Sincere Dedication To Black Business Initiatives. And So Does His Wife Who Works Alongside Him. Together They Hosted The Event Held At The Wonderfully (Once Inside) Glamourous And Self-Contained Come Cosy Venue of The Saray Banqueting Suite In Edmonton, Market Square, On Saturday April 15 2023 sarayevents.co.uk
It Was Well Attended, The Food Was Great (Provided By Mr George Hamilton & His Team At Plantation-Inn.co.uk) The Drinks Were Flowing, The Ambience Was Nice And Everybody Was Well Behaved And Had A Good Time.
The Actual Awards Themselves Were Beautiful And One Award-Winner Received An Extra Beautiful £10,000 Business Boost. The Winner of The BBR £10,000 Business Loan Award. That Was Presented To IDID3D Limited, A 3D Design Technology Company, In The Form of A Time-Honoured Oversized Cheque, For Dramatic Effect. And Hopeful ly This Supportive Investment Will Help Dramatically Improve Their Fortunes.

One of Our Favourite Entrepreneurs Was Also In The House, Mr Michael Dalgety of Dalgety Teas. We’ve Watched And Listened To Him In Many An Interview (Including By BBR Themselves) And Found Him Very Impressive & Inspirational. With All The Buzzing About And Never Enough Time At These Events We Missed Speaking With Him On The Night. But We Have Duly Reached Out To Him For Comment On The Event, Several Times And Ways Since, As He Seemed Like Our Cup of Tea.
But Alas We’ve Have Had No Response Yet From Him or His Company, Which We Must Say Does Not Seem At All Like Him. And Is Not What We Would Have Expected From A Friendly, Positive, Open Entrepreneur Like Him. (Meantime For Now We’ll Just Comfort Ourselves With The Fact That They Do Say You Should Never Meet Your Heros…Nonetheless Watch This Space As We Continue Our Endeavours To Get To The Bottom of These Particular Tea Leafs. And Hopefully Bring You Some Refreshing Words From Him At A Later Date.)

Huw Says BBR Offers Small Business Owners A Collaborative Space In Which To Network And It Offers Business Development Advice, Training, And Tuition To Help Start, Grow, And Upskill Businesses Particularly In The Current Climate (Which Let’s Face It Is A Long Term Effect of The Disaster That Was The Liz Truss/Kwasi Kwarteng Budget, Brexit And Russia’s Attack On Ukraine. Although Let’s Also Face It, If It Wasn’t All Those Things There Would Have Been Something Else. There’s Always Some Excuse From These Politicians No Matter What’s Happening.)
In 2017, Noticing An Ongoing Lack Of Support For Black-Owned Businesses, An Observation That Never Left Him, He Launched Black Business Recommendation To Spotlight And Uplift The Black Community.
In Particular, The Philosophy Behind The Loan Is To Demonstrate That The Black Business Community Can Come Together And Collaborate To Raise Funds To Be Deposited Into A Central Pool And Redistributed In Order To Help Another Black Owned Business Secure Financial And Moral Support In The Development of Their Enterprise. The Award Ceremony And Presentation of The Interest Free Loan (Awarded To The Most Worthy And Successful Applicant As Judged By BBR’s Special Business Panel) Are Designed To Showcase And Facilitate And Celebrate Black Business Excellence And Achievement. Huw Says Our Support Will Allow More Businesses To Achieve Visibility, Business Development, Economic Growth, Strategies And Legacy.
It Appears That This Initiative Is Very Much Needed Within The Black Business Community As BBR States That Recent Reports Have Identified 90% Of Black-Owned Businesses Have Not Been Able To Access Funding Through High-Street Banks And Financial Institutions. It Has Proven To Be Very Difficult For Black Businesses To Receive Funding Or Positive Outcomes When Applying For Loans Through The Usual Channels.

The Awards Will Now Be An Annual Event Which Aims To Also Acknowledge Community Initiatives, People Who Have Helped Shape Community Cohesion, And Build Business Strength Within The Community Through Awards, Business Funding, Business Certifications, And Fundraising Events, Year-On-Year To Include The Wider Community At Large.
