Appointments & Admissions To Ancient ‘Orders’ of The Royal Court Live On Through The Birthday Honours List & New Year’s Honours List.
And The Chosen Ones Are Free To Decline or Accept!
Dame Shirley Bassey DBE CH Was Appointed A Dame of The British Empire In 1999 By Queen Elizabeth II For Services To The Performing Arts. Virtually A Quarter Century Later, On Friday November 17 2023, In Monoco She Was Awarded The Order of Saint Charles By Prince Albert II of Monoco To Honour & Recognise Merit & Services To The State Prince & The Principality. And In The New Years Honours List Announced December 30th 2023 She Was Admitted To The The Order of the Companions of Honour of The British Empire By King Charles III For Services To Music. There Motto Is ‘In Action Faithful And In Honour Clear’.
By The Time She Received Her Damehood In 1999 She Was Already Such A Star That She Had Been Asked On Three Seperate Occassions To Record Three Different Bond Movie Theme Tunes (Still The Only Star In History To Do So). Goldfinger 1964, Diamonds Are Forever 1971, And Moonraker 1979.
She’s Performed At The Royal Albert Hall Circa 45 Times.
In 1977 (The Year of Queen Elizabeth II’s 25 Year Jubilee) She Was The First Woman To Receive A BRIT Award For Best British Solo Female Artist. It Was The First Year of The Event And Was Televised Especially By The Then Thames Television TV Production Company. It Would Be 5 Years Before The Event Was Staged Again In 1982 And It Was Been Televised Annually Ever Since. Dame Bassey Also Headlined The 2012 Jubilee Musical Celebrations At Buckingham Palace.
Brought Up In Tiger Bay In Wales, She Is One of Six Children Raised By Her Nigerian Father And Welsh Mother.
At School Hers Is A Sad And All To Familiar Tale of Receiving Little Encouragement From British School Teachers As A Black Child or Dual Heritage Child. And Being Discouraged When She Showed Any Singing Talent. Even By The Choir Master She Recalls. And Being Subjected To Claims of Making A Teacher “Feel Uncomfortable.”
Born January 8 1937, She Left School At 14 And Began To Sing In Pubs & Clubs In The Evenings. Fabulously She Made Her First Performance At The London Palladium In 1957. Aged Just 20.
She Is The Only Female Singing Star To Have A Top 40 UK Album Over Each of The Last 7 Decades. Basically Every Decade Since! Like Barbara Striesand, Cher, And Gloria Gaynor, She Is A Global Super Star, A Gay Icon And A Genuine National Treasure.
In June 2023 She Was Added To The Music Legend Collection of Personalised Coins Pressed By The Royal Mint (She Said She Would Gift Hers To Her Great Grandson Who She Was Off To See For The First Time). It Is Inspiring That She Is Still Having Great New Experiences Aged 86 Very Nearly 87. And Still Looking Amazing!
Those Who’ve Declined Honours Include The Late Bajan & Jamaican Writer, Poet, Actor & PeakyBlinder @BenjaminZephaniah, Chef @NigellaLawson, And Monty Python Comedian And Basil Faulty Funnyman, Now Senior Citizen, Turned Right Wing Politics Presenter & Commentator @JohnCleeseOfficial.
Interestingly Some Chivlaric Orders Only Allow The Admission of A Limited Number of Living Members No Matter How Noble Any Other Nominees May Be. Whilst Admissions & Appointments Are Announced In The Bi-Annual Honours List The Actual Giving of The Medals By A Delegated Member of The Royal Family Takes Place In A Seperate Investiture Ceremony Later On In The Year. A Very Limited Number of Friends or Family Members May Attend The Event With The Recipient.
Various Different Royal Households (Royal Courts) Across Europe And Further Abroad Established Their Own System of Honours, Decorations And Medals Throughout The Early, High And Late Middles Ages (The Latter Also Known As The Dark Ages) For Noblemen Who Fought For The Sake of The Sovereign, Religious Crusades or Royal Missions. Such Medieval Noblemen Were Known As Knights Who Famously Travelled, Fought And Performed On Horseback. Given Their Association To The Royal Courts They Operated A Code of Conduct Relating To How They Behaved In Military, Diplomacy, And Romantic Missions, Which Was Known As Chivalry (Developed From The French Word ‘Cheval’ Meaning Horse).
Legendary Tales Centred Around The Warrior King Arthur And The Knights of The Round Table, Who Lived Circa The 5th Century, Are Most Famously Documented In The Manuscript By Welsh Clergyman Geoffrey Monmouth Called ‘History of British Kings’ Circa 1138. (Why There Is Such A Huge Gap Between King Arthur’s Day And His Story Being Documented On The Written Page Is Something That Is Historically, Largely, Notoriously, Ill-Explained.)
Similiar Such Medieval Tales of Triumph, Contained In Another Medieval Manuscript Called ‘The Matter of Britain’ Document Tales of William The Conqueror And The Battle of Hastings In 1066 Back, To Which The Current Monarchy Can Trace Their History And The End of The Invading Vikings And Anglo-Saxons. It Was After Normandy Conquest That The British Honoury System of Knighthoods, Orders And Medals Further Developed.
Each Knight Belonged To A Particular ‘Order’ (or Group) of Knights. In Arthurian Legends There Were Even The Queen’s Knights, Assigned To Protect Guinevere (The Wife of Warrior King Arthur). They Carried Plain White Shields (Hence They Were Known As White Knights).
In 1348 Edward III Established The Most Noble Order of The Garter, Which Is Still Celebrated With An Annual Procession At Windsor Castle Today.
In 1896 Queen Victoria Created The Royal Victorian Order (RVO). It Rewards Service To The Royal Family Directly. Established And Run By The Sovereign It Operates Without Governmental Interference. King Eward VII Prescribed The ‘Royal Victorian Chain’ In 1902 As Part of The Noble & Royal Dress For Those With Such Honours.
In 1917 George V Established The Most Excellent Order of The British Empire In Honour of Citizens Who Made Non Military Contributions To Society During WW1.
More Recently, Since The Passing of The Late Queen, On September 8th 2022, King Charles III, Now Has Ultimate Say Regarding Granting Honours To Selected Commowealth Citizens.
There Is A Formal Recommendation & Nomination Process Run Via The Cabinet Office. An Associated Committee Then Advices On The Subsequent Awarding of Honours, Decorations, And Medals To Members of The Royal Household, Military, Government, And General Public.

Theatre Diversity Pioneer, Solange Urdang, Whose Parents Fled South Africa In Objection To Apartheid, And Who Co.Founded The Black British Theatre Awards, Is Admitted To The Order of The British Empire (Awarded An OBE) For Services To Dance & Musical Theatre

We Are Very Particular About Picture Selection Here At TO.P And When We Selected This Picture of Solange Urdang @solangeurdang For Our TheOrator.Press Black History Month Issue, October 2023, Featuring The Black British Theatre Awards (@BBTA’s) 5 Year Anniversary Special Feature, Little Did We Know She Would In Fact Be Receiving A Royal Honour “The Week In Between Christmas & New Year 2023” Just A Matter of Weeks Later.
With This Rather Royal Seal of Approval Following Our Black British Theatre Special We Are Reassured That Our Powers of Selection & Perception Working Well And We Should Keep Doing What We’re Doing. Namely, Building TheOrator.Press Online, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity And Accountability Magazine. A Positive Magazine, For Positive People, By Positive People!
Congratulations To Solange. We Are Thrilled The Palace Recognises Her Great Work Just Like Us And Innumberable Others Too. And We Look Forward To Co. Founder Omar Okai Receiving Due Royal Recognition Too. Meanwhile We Are Thrilled To Have Received His Gracious Statement of Support When We Reached Out To Him For Comment Regarding Solange’s Award.
“I have know Solange since 1990, almost 34 years. Having taught at the Urdang Academy when it’s was in Covent Garden. I was employed as a teacher by her trail blazing mother Leonie Urdang, who comes from a family of Anti Apartheid activists and was one of the first people to open the arts training for all creeds and colours in Britain long before the term ‘ diversity ‘ was coined.
this included employing black teachers, directors and choreographers in her performing arts school. I have witnessed Solange take up the mantle when her mother passed away.
The school under her leadership grew and became ‘thee‘ most all round diverse school in Europe. She has raised millions in scholarships over the years so young future performers can carry out their dreams, without being hindered by lack of wealth or lack of opportunity.
We Have, Over The Near 34 Years, Become Very Close Friends And Are Both Respected Within The Performing Arts, Which Has Gained The Trust of Not Just The Performers But Creatives And Producers.
