Windrush Perseverance & Resistence
The Role of Secretary of State For The Department of Culture Media And Sport (DCMS) Was Created Under Tony Blair’s Groundbreaking 1997 New Labour Government. It Superceded The Department of National Heritage (DNH) Created In 1992 Created By The Tories Under Thatcher. Prior To That There Were Two Seperate Ministers For Art And Sport Since I964.
Numerous Windrush Achievements, Cultural Contributions And Instiutions Have Been Officially Acknowledged By The British Government, Highlighting The Importance of That Generation, Their Fight Against Racism And Their Right For Respectful Recognition.
This Includes Across Museums, Libraries, Schools, Universities, Learning Institutions, Literature, Industry, Business, Television, Fashion, Music, Sport, Politics And Policing
Trinidadian Actor, Rudolph Walker CBE, Is A Passionate Supporter of Carnival, Which He Used To Enjoy In Trinidad Before Coming To Britian. A Fact Which He Shares In His Autobiography ‘Walking’ With Dignity (Which We Have Read And Reviewed). He Regularly Supports Notting Hill Carnival Each August Bank.
He Has Reflected This In His Own Art As Well. In A Groundbreaking Episode of Eastenders In February 2009, Marking The Year of Both The First Notting Hill Carnival And The Tragic Racist Kelso Cochrane Murder (January 1959 And May 1959 Respectively) Rudolph’s Character, Patrick Trueman, As Part of An All Black Cast, Looks Back And Reflects Upon The 1958 Notting Hill Race Riots.
However, The Strain of The Murder And Fighting For Justice Devestated The Marriage of Neville And Doreen Lawerence. And Their Health And Wellbeing. Neville Returned To Jamaica (Where He Insisted His Son Be Buried And He Be Close To Him). Doreen’s Fight In England Continued And She Later Became Baroness Lawerence In Recognition of Her Exceptional Endeavours Against A System Designed Against The Windrush Community And Their Children.
The Baroness’s Fight Against’ And Resistence To’ A Racist British Police Force And The British Mainstream Media (Elements of Which Were Exposed As Investigating Her Family Rather Than Her Son’s Killers) Continues To This Very Day.
She Is Currently Amongst A Powerful Group of Litigants Including Prince Harry, Sir Elton John, Actress Sadie Frost (Ex-Wife of Actor Jude Law) And Model And Actress Elizabeth Hurley (Ex-Girlfriend of Actor Hugh Grant) Who Are Suing The Daily Mail Publishing House Associated Newspapers For Breach of Privacy And Cofidentiality Related To Phone-Hacking.

A White Racist Gang Killing, Followed By Police Incompetence 1958
On The Night of May 16 1958, 36 Year Old Antiguan Carpenter, Kelsco Cochrane Took Himself From Home To A Local Notting Hill Area Hospital Following A Thumb Injury Which Rendered Him Unable To Sleep. On His Way Home, After Being Treated, He Was Tragically, Savegley, Stabbed To Death By A Gang of White Racists. Two of The Suspected Killers Were Widely Known In The Local Community. Yet Were Arrested And Released After Being Placed In Police Cells Next To Each Other And Given The Opportunity To Iron Out Their Stories.
Nobody Was Ever Charged. The Police Also Later Allowed Forensic Evidence To Be Destroyed.
This Is Significant Because It Was Forensic Analysis That Later Convicted Two of The Murderers of Stephen Lawrence Years Later.
A Report Into Race Relations In Britain Was Commissioned After The Cochrane Murder. It Was Led By Amy Garvey (Ex Wife of Marcus Garvey, Then Living In Britan At The Time). However That Did Not Prevent The Infamous 1958 Race Riots That Followed Just Three Months Later.
Diabolically The Police Denied Kelso’s Killing And The August Riots Were Race Related.
On August 29 1958 Swedish Woman Majbritt Morrison And Her Jamaican Husband Were Arguing In Public At Latimar Road Tube Sation. Fights Between Black And White Groups Broke Out. The Following Day, August Majbritt Was Alone And Attacked In The Street. That Same Night, August 30th 1958, Homes of Local West Indians Were Attacked. The Unrest Continued For A Week. It Was Finally Quelled A Week Later By September 6th 1958.
The Case Was A Turning Point. Over A Thousand People Attended Kelso’s Funeral And The Neighbourhood Demanded An End To The Racist Violence.
Much of This White Violence Against The Windrush Generation Was Stirred Up By Racist Politician Oswald Mosely, His Gang of Street Thugs And His Supporters, And Some (Not All) British Elvis And Rock n Roll Fans Known As Teddy Boys.
The Claudia Jones Initiative * Months Earlier Seems To Have Had An Impact.
