A White Racist Gang Killing, Followed By Police Incompetence 1958

On The Night of May 16 1958, 36 Year Old Antiguan Carpenter, Kelsco Cochrane Took Himself From Home To A Local Notting Hill Area Hospital Following A Thumb Injury Which Rendered Him Unable To Sleep. On His Way Home, After Being Treated, He Was Tragically, Savegley, Stabbed To Death By A Gang of White Racists. Two of The Suspected Killers Were Widely Known In The Local Community. Yet Were Arrested And Released After Being Placed In Police Cells Next To Each Other And Given The Opportunity To Iron Out Their Stories.
Nobody Was Ever Charged. The Police Also Later Allowed Forensic Evidence To Be Destroyed.
This Is Significant Because It Was Forensic Analysis That Later Convicted Two of The Murderers of Stephen Lawrence Virtually Three And A Half Decades Later.
A Report Into Race Relations In Britain Was Commissioned After The Kelso Cochrane Murder. It Was Led By Amy Garvey (Ex Wife of Marcus Garvey, Then Living In Britan At The Time).
Diabolically The Police Denied That Kelso’s Murder In May, Spring 1959 And The Riots In August, Summer 1958, The Year Before, Were Race Related.
On August 29 1958 Swedish Woman Majbritt Morrison And Her Jamaican Husband Were Arguing In Public At Latimar Road Tube Station. Fights Between Black And White Groups Subsequently Broke Out. The Following Day, August Majbritt Was Alone And Attacked In The Street. That Same Night, August 30th 1958, Homes of Local West Indians Were Attacked. The Unrest Continued For A Week. It Was Finally Quelled By September 6th 1958.
The May 1959 Kelso Case Was A Turning Point. Over A Thousand People Attended Kelso’s Funeral And The Neighbourhood Demanded An End To The Racist Violence.
The Claudia Jones (Indoor) Carnival Initiative 9 Months Earlier Had Impacted The Community Just As She Hoped It Would. It Was A Demonstration By Way of Funeral Attendance. The People Came To Salute Kelso. They Refused To Engage With Those Who Saluted Nazis.
Claudia Jones, Originally From Trinidad, Then Emigrated To New York, Now Living In Britain Having Been Deported From America For Her Political Views, Was A Newspaper Woman Who Knew The Importance And Power of Media And PR. So She Started The ŴIG (West Indian Gazette) May 1958, Above A Brixton Barber Shop At 250 Brixton Road.
The Notting Hill Riots In The Royal Borough of Kensington And Chelsea, As Well As The Associate Nottingham Riots In Robin Hood Chase, Began Just Four Months Later In August 1958. Kelso Cochrane Was Killed Within A Year After That. In May 1959
New Orleans Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) Is Celebrated From The 12th Night of Christmas (Epiphany January 6th) To Shrove Tuesday (The Day Before Lent aka Pancake Day) So As A Former American She Conceived The Idea of Having A Mardi Gras Caribbean Style Celebration “To Wash The Taste of Notting Hill And Nottingham Out of Our Mouths.“
Being British Winter Time This Initial Event Was Held Indoors At St. Pancras Town Hall. Jazz Singer Cleo Laine Was The Headline Guest, Eric Holder, Who Helped Manage The Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra Playing At The 1951 Festival of Britain, Was Director, The Boscoe Holder Dance Troupe Also Performed, As Did Jazz Guitarist Fitzroy Coleman. The BBC Televised It Nationally. Five More Such Annual Events Followed, Including At The Porchester Hall And The Lyceum Ballroom. 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963 And 1964. Ironically, Jones Died At Home, Alone, Christmas Eve 1964.
Russell Henderson’s Steel Band Had Played At Claudia’ Debut Indoor Event And Went On To Play At The First Outdoor Carnival In 1966. Carnival Has Been Outdoors Ever Since. It Is Now Europe’s Largest Street Carnival, Attracts Tourists From Around The World, Annually Generates Billions of Pounds For The British Economy, And Has Triumphed Over Racial Hatred For Over Six Decades.

Apology Rejected
In October 2025, During Yet Another Government Commissioned Enquiry Into Police Impropriety, Via Her Long Term Lawyer, Imran Khan QC, Baroness Lawrence Rejected An Apology Offered By The Met Police For Undercover Surveillance Carried Out Against Her And Her Family Virtually Immediately After Stephen’s Murder. It Included Infiltration of A Group Called ‘The Movement For Justice’ Which Supported The Lawrences. The Objective, According To Undercover Cop Turned Whistleblower, Peter Francis, Was To Discredit. She Also Voiced Her Belief That The Home Office Had Been Involved Too, After Theresa May (Home Secretary 2010-2016; PM 2016-2019) Seemed At Pains To Convince Her That They Weren’t.
The Original Undercover Policing Enquiry Into The MET Was Established In 2014 After Ex-Undercover Cop Peter Francis Blew The Whistle About His Own Operational Activity Within Anti-Racist Groups Between 1993 and 1997.
In January 2012 Norris And Dobbs Were Unanimously Convicted of Murder After New Forensic Evidence Was Uncovered By DCI Clive Driscoll And His Team After A Fresh Review of The Case Began In 2006 Called ‘Operation Fishpool’. Rather Than Support Him In An Effort To Convict The Remaining Three Suspects, The MET Forced Driscoll’s Retirement (Scheduling It For June 2014). This Highlights The Fact That Institutional Racism Remained Deeply Rooted In The MET Police.
Driscoll Testified At The Levison Inquiry Into Newspaper Culture, Practices And Ethics, That There Was A Leak At Scotland Yard Disclosing Confidential Intelligence To The Press (In Particular The Daily Mail). The Leak Was Never Officially Identified, In Effect That Made Everyone A Suspect, Which In Turn Harmed The Case.
Duwayne Brooks Sues Metropolitan Police For Malicious Prosecution; Accepts £100,000 Settlement
To Add Further Insult To Injury Duwayne Brooks (Stephen’s Study Friend Who Was With Him On The Night of The Attack) Was Also Subjected To The ‘Special Demonstration Squad’ Covert Antics As Well.
Virtually Straight Away It Became Clear To Him That The Investigation Was Not Being Run Properly – Because He Was Being Treated As A Suspect Rather Than A Victim And A Witness To A Crime. In Protest He Attended A Demonstration Outside The Offices of A Local Branch of The Right Wing Group The British National Party (The BNP) In May 1993 (Just Weeks After He And Stephen Were Attacked – And He Managed To Get Away). Several People Were Arrested But Charges Were Dropped Against Them In July. Duwayne However Was Not Identified As Being There Until September 1993. He Was Subsequently Arrested For Allegedly Being Violent At The Demonstration. The Case Against Him Was Eventually Dropped.
Following The Conviction of Two of The Murderers In 2012, But The MET Defying The Judge’s Encouragement That The Other Three Known Associates Be Pursued To Justice And The IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission – Now The IOPC – Independent Office of Police Conduct) Concluding That There Was No New Evidence To Justify Further Investigation, Home Secretary Theresa May Commissioned A Review of Undercover Police Practices, To Be Led By Mark Ellison QC (Who Had Prosecuted The Two Murderers Who Were Convicted). His (March 6th) 2014 Report Concluded That The Case Against Brooks Should Have Been Dropped Much Sooner Than It Was.
His Report Also Followed Whistleblowing By Former Undercover Officer ‘Peter Francis’ Revealing To The Guardian Newspaper And Channel Four Documentary Programme Dispatches That He Was Given The Code Name ‘Peter Black’ And The Remit of “any intelligence that could have smeared the campaign. Along the lines of: the family were political activists, someone in the family was involved in demonstrations, drug dealers, anything.”
His Objective Was “To Ensure That The Public did not have as much sympathy for the Stephen Lawrence campaign” and “to persuade the media to start maybe tarring the campaign”.
In 2000 He Was Arrested 2000 For Sexual Assault. Again The Case Against Him Was Dropped. In 2006 Right At The Very Last Minute Outside The Doors of The Central London County Court The MET Settled A Malicious Prosecution Claim Against Them By Paying Brooks £100,000. Brooks Published His Book ‘Stephen And Me’ In 2006.

Groundbreaking Statement, After Damning Judgement, Makes Crystal Clear, How The Court, The Judge, The Lawyers And The Protestors Established That The Metropolitan Police, The College of Policing And The Metropolitan Police Commissioner (Then Cressida Dick, Who Later, Eventually, Begrudgingly Resigned) All Got It Wrong. “The Covid Restrictions Included ‘Reasonable Excuse’ For Organising or ‘Taking Part In A Gathering or Vigil’. The MPS Starting Point Should Have Been Rational And Informed Assessment of Whether Organisers Could Claim Such Excuse. They Did Not Do That.”

Soul Singer Richie Sampson, A Former School Teacher Turned Lead Singer of 60s Soul Group ‘Soul Kinda Wonderful’ @soulkindawonderful (Pictured Below) Remembers Stephen Lawrence (Who Stayed On To The 6th Form). In September 2023 (During An Interview With TheOrator.Press (TO.P) At Boisdales Music Venue – Where We Were Interviewing And Watching His Band That Evening) – He Told Us About A Powerful Peaceful Protest By Local Schools In The Area After They Learnt of Stephen’s Terrible Racist Murder.
“I Taught Stephen Lawrence. I Was At The John Roan School When Stephen Lawrence Was Taken From Us. Where He Fell In Eltham I Was There. We Took The Kids From School And We Walked Down There To Protest That This Was Injustice. And I’m So Glad That We Were Able To Fight That Particular Injustice And Some of The People Who Were Down There Were Brought To Justice.”
“It Was A Big Thing In Eltham And A Big Thing In The Community. The Headteacher [Later] Decided We Were Going To March The Whole School Down To Bus Stop In Eltham. All The Other Schools In The Area Came Down On That Day Too. The Neighbours Came Out. People On The Street. And Everybody On That Day Stood In Silence. There Were Thousands of Kids And There Wasn’t One Incident. Everybody Marched. And Were So Well Behaved. Because They Understood The Importance of That Particular Day.”
“Even Now When I’m Passing Through London On Tour And I Pass Through There When Going To Some of The Shows, I Pass That Bus Stop In Eltham And I See How Far His Friend Had To Run To Get To The Police Station At The Top of The Road [Shooters Hill Police Station]. The National Front Headquarters (In Nearby Welling) And In 2009 The Nearby Ferrier Estate, Notorious For Having A Skinhead, National Front And Rampant Racism Element, Was Demolished, With Residents Being Rehoused Elsewhere, And The Twenty Year Development Project of A New ‘Kidbrooke Village’ Beginning.]
In A Seperate Documentary On Windrush History, And The New Croos Fire, Community Leader Ros Howells Observed That In Terms of Racism, In The 1980s, The World Had Changed But It Was Not Clear That The Police Had. Tragically, Her Words Still Rang True In The 1990s, The 2000s, And Beyond, Up To Today. Generations Later.
She Eventually Became A Labour MP And Later Baroness Howells On Account of Her Community Work And Dedication To Matters of Relating To Equality And Justice. She Contributed To A Number of Police Related Inquiries, Including The Lawrence Case.

A Family Torn Apart
The Lawrence Family Took On The Metropolitan Police And Won A Number of Significant Victories. This Included Two White Racist Killers Being Convicted For Murder, The Met Police Being Officially And Judicially Exposed As Being “Institutionally Racist”, Doreen Lawrence Becoming A Baroness And Neville Lawrence Being Awarded An Honorary Doctorate Both In Relation To Their Groundbreaking Pursuit of Justice.
However, The Strain of Their Son’s Murder And Fighting For Justice Devastated Their Marriage. They Separated In 1999 And Ultimately Divorced (Notably This Has Happened Before In A Number of Marriages Involving The Parents At The Centre of High Profile Cases Where The Couple’s Child Has Been Murdered).
Notwithstanding Their Separation, In Their Own Right Both Were Awarded An OBE In The Queen’s New Year’s Honour’s List 2003 For Services To Community Relations. Ten Years Later Doreen Was Made A Life Peer In The House of Lords, Becoming Baroness of Clarendon (Where She Was Born In 1952). Dr. Lawrence Was Awarded An Honorary Law Doctorate In 2017 By Portsmouth University, Having Given Numerous Talks On The Need For Society To Get On Together And Not Hate Nor Discriminate. He Also Became Chair of the Metropolitan Police Knife Crime Group.
Nonetheless, He Has Repeatedly Said That Decades Later His Emotions Still Remain Raw. Baroness Lawrence Has Also Explained The Monumental Impact The Case Has Had On Her Mental Health.
Yet More Sorry Behaviour From The MET Police
In June 2023 A BBC Documentary Named A 6th Suspect As David White (Who Died In 2021, After Apparently Confessing To Being Present On The Night, But Was Ignored By The Police).
Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley Promised To Answer All Questions The Baroness Had In Relation To The Revealations. In April 2024 He Apologised For Not Honouring That Promise.
In July 2023 The CPS Confirmed It Would Not Prosecute Four of The Original Officers Involved In The Murder Investigation. That Was Reaffirmed In June 2024 After An Independent Police Force Was Commissioned To Review The Investigation.
Family Fallout
From Very Early On Neville Made Clear That He Wanted To Be Close To His Son And Chose To Return To Jamaica (Where It Was Agreed Stephen Would Be Buried As He Would Not Be At Peace In The UK). More Recently In August 2024 Dr. Neville Voiced His Disgust That The Rest of The Family Had Made The Decision To Move Stephen Back To London To Be Closer To Them (31 Years After The Murder). Doreen (Via Her Lawyer) Her Voiced Her Disgust At The State The Funeral Home In Jamaican Had Left Stephen’s Grave After The Exhumation of His Body.
Parole Denied
In March 2025 It Was Announced By The Parole Board That David Norris Had Made An Application For Parole And The Hearing Would Be Held In Public Following An Application By A Media Group. The Venue Would Be Secure. Public Access Would Be Remote. Norris Had Unsuccessfully Opposed The Hearing Being Public. He’d Been Attacked In Prison A Number of Times And Was Officially Diagnosed With PTSD.
During The Parole Hearing He Said He Regretted Being At Stephen’s Murder And That He Was No Longer A Racist. But He Refused To Confirm The Names of The Other Murderers Who Were Present.
Baroness Lawrence Dismissed Norris As A Liar, Still Racist And Lacking Contrition. Furthermore He’d Been Involved In Racist Behaviour Whilst In Prison, As Recently As 2023.
In October 2025 The Norris Parole Application Was Denied.

The Baroness Continues Her Fight Against’ And Resistance To’ An Institutionally Racist British Police Force And Some Elements of The Mainstream British Media To This Very Day. The MET Police Eventually Being Exposed As Having Investigated Her Family Rather Than Her Son’s Killers, In An Attempt To Publicly Discredit The Lawrence Campaign For Justice, Literally Added Insult To Injury.
