Below We Reflect On Recent Windrush Problems, Progress And Positivity Resulting In Positive Race Relations Progress In Britain And Providing Extra Pride, Hope And Inspiration For A New Generation From Generations Past

In Britain The Role of Secretary of State For The Department of Culture Media And Sport (DCMS) Was Created Under Tony Blair’s Groundbreaking 1997 New Labour Government. It Superceeded The Department of National Heritage (DNH) Created In 1992 Created By The Tories Under Thatcher. Prior To That There Were Two Seperate Ministers For Art And Sport Since I964. Currently Labour MP Lisa Nandy Is The Secretary of State For Culture, Media And Sport. Her Remit Includes The Royal Parks Agency, The Crown Estate (Legislated By The Crown Land Act 1951), The Occupied Royal Palaces And Marlborough House (Hyde Park Corner). The Civil List – (Literally A List of High End Persons or Properties Entitled To Receive State Funding) – And – The Sovereign Grant – Are Used To Fund The Occupied Palaces (Via Payment To ‘The Royal Household’) As Administered By The Treasury.

The Office of The Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) Is Responsible For The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) (Which Has Undergone A Number of Iterations Since It Was Originally Formed In 2001 Under Tony Blair’s Labour Government; Including The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities – As At One Stage Renamed By Boris Johnson’s Tory Government.) Windrush Projects And Funded Under This Department.

Numerous Windrush Achievements, Cultural Contributions And Institutions Have Been Officially Acknowledged By The British Government, Highlighting The Importance of That Generation, Their Fight Against Racism And Their Right For Respectful Recognition. This Includes Across Museums, Libraries, Schools, Universities, Learning Institutions, Literature, Industry, Business, Television, Fashion, Music, Sport, Politics And Policing.

For Instance, Trinidadian Actor, Rudolph Walker CBE, Was Honored In The 2020 New Year’s Honours List For His Services To Drama And Charity. He Shared Part of His Windrush Journey Through The Art of His Craft As A Much Loved Actor In The Popular BBC Hit Soap Opera ‘Eastenders’. In A Groundbreaking Special Episode Featuring An All Black Cast In February 2009, Marking The 50th Anniversary of Both The First (Indoor) Notting Hill Carnival And The Tragic Racist Murder of Kelso Cochrane (January 1959 And May 1959 Respectively), Rudolph’s Character, Patrick Trueman, Reflects Upon The 1958 Notting Hill Race Riots, The Year Before (See Page. He Has Also Done Much Work With The Windrush Committee.

The Windrush Committee, The UK Government Windrush Scandal & Subsequent Windrush Scandal Demonstrations. A Debut Windrush Commissioner Is Born.

Following Much Campaigning By Community Activists (Including Patrick Vernon) In 2018 Theresa May’s Conservative Government Announced There Would Be An Annual Windrush Day (June 22) Acknowledging The Windrush Generation And Their Descendants. Three Years Later, Boris Johnson’s Tory Government Announced The Establishment of The Windrush Commemoration Committee. Veteran Children’s Television Presenter And Welfare Advocate Baroness Floella Benjamin, OBE DL (Deputy Lieutenant) Is Its Chairperson. The Following Year On Windrush Day 2022 Jamaican Sculptor Basil Watson Unveiled The National Windrush Monument At London’s Busy International Waterloo Station. Prince And Princess William And Katherine Were In Attendance. This Is Progress Indeed Compared To Trials And Tribulations of The Windrush Generation In Previous Years.

In 2019 The Inaugural Annual £500,000 Grant Scheme Was Launched For Windrush Projects, Including Art, Oral History Presentations, Exhibitions, Age UK Projects, Inter-Generational Projects, Collaborations Between Educators, Historians, And Actors, Museum, Theatre, Radio, Podcasts, Digital, And Social Media Projects.

Nonetheless The ‘Windrush Scandal’ of 2018 Was A Disgrace That Led To The Resignation of Then Home Secretary Amber Rudd (After She Was Deemed To Have Lied To Parliament About Her Knowledge of Deportation Targets Created In The Home Office). An Anti-Immigration Scheme Had Been Set Up Within The Home Office To Forcibly Remove Windrush Citizens Who Had Established Lives, Families, Homes, And Careers Here And Were Nevertheless Asked To Prove Their Citizenship Through Certain Paperwork – But Couldn’t ‘Produce Their Papers On Demand’ As It Were. It Caused Heartache, Fatalities, And National Outrage.

Still Today Many Have Not Received Proper Compensation. This Has Led To A Number of Windrush Reparations And Demonstrations, Whiich Have Included Attendance And Support From Diane Abbot, Now An Independent MP, But Labour’s First Black Female MP. Black Community Leaders Rose Up To Establish A Voice For Black People In Parliament In The !980s After The Aforementioned New Cross Fire. Since Then Diane Abbot Has Become The Most Abused MP In British Parliamentary History. Racism Is Rife Everywhere. Which Is Why Continued Resistence Is Imperative, In Order To Keep Fighting The Often False And Destructive, Racist Narrative And Keep Pushing Forward. It Is The Only Way To Make Progress And Much Progress Has Been Made.

Reverend Clive Foster MBE Was Appointed The First Windrush Commissioner In June 2025. In This Public Yet Independent Role His Remit Is Supporting Those Endeavouring To Right That Wrong. He Says:

“The Windrush Generation’s Legacy Should Be Their Contribution To Britain, Not The Windrush Scandal”.
