Wayne In His Brixton Gallery With Award-Winning British-Jamaican Writer, Linton Kwesi Johnson (March 2024). He Says Johnson’s 1980s Music Track ‘Sonny’s Lettah’ Introduced Him To The Concept of Revolution. A Young Man Suffering From Police Harassment Finds Himself In Prison After Standing Up To Them. He Describes It As “Reggae Poetry” And Something He Can Relate To Having Grown Up In Brixton And Witnessed Poor Police Behaviour First Hand.

Johnson Says “As A School Boy I Had No Idea Black People Wrote Books”. Becoming A Member of The Black Power Movement Introduced Him To Literature And He Eventually Became An Award-Winning Writer, Public Speaker, And World Class Orator. lintonkwesijohnson.com:

This Highlights The Biased Nature of The British Education System And The Importance of Being Taught Black History. And Furthermore How The Absence of A Diverse Narrative Can Help Formulate Social & Cultural Impressions And Stereotypes of Black People. By Both White People, And, Black People Themselves!

‘The Souls of Black Folk’ By W.E.B. DU BOIS (Co. Founder of The NAACP)  Inspired Him To Write Poetry, As Did The Black Panther Movement In America (Especially With The Athletes At The 1968 Olympics Makin The Black Panther Sign With Their Fists Bein’ Very Inspirational To Many In The Movement At The Time).

He Says Music Was Important Too. Marvin Gaye – ‘What’s Going On?’ Stevie Wonder – ‘Just Enough For The City’. James Brown – ‘Say It Loud And Say It Proud.’ ‘I’m Black And I’m Proud’. He Describes The Latter As “One of The Earliest Rap Tunes’ Because James Brown Is Not Just Naturally Singing On That Track, He’s Talking Too”.

Linton Also Joined Darcus Howe, A Main Black Power Movement Speaker, Editing A Magazine Produced Through The Race Today Collective Associated With The Black Power Movement. Also A Firsthand Witness To This Era of Black British Race Relations History Was Photographer Charlie Phillip (With Wayne, Column Three, Opposite).

The Mangrove Case Was Central To This As The First To Judicially Recognize Racism Within The Met Police. And Where Black British Citizens Successfully, Legally, Fought Back Against Police Lies And Harassment.

[As Opposed To Serving And Protecting Themselves.]

Wayne In His Brixton Gallery With Legendary Photographer Charlie Phillips (January 2024). In The 1950s Charlie Was Attacked By A Group of Teddy Boys And Rescued By A White Woman Who Put Her Arm Around Him & Took Him Away, Telling The White Racists To Leave Him Alone.

She Shouted: – “We’ve Got Sons As Well!” –

(By Which She Meant That White Mothers Could Empathize With Black Women Who Would Not Wish To Hear Harm Had Come To Their Sons.)

The Incident Inspired Him To Start Taking Photographs.

As Wayne Says, He Was The OG Visual Activist.

You Can Find Out More About Charlie Phillip And His Involvement In The 1970s Black Power Movement In TO.P’s Review of The Excellent Steve McQueen Documentary ‘A Story of Resistance’ (2021). It Also References McQueen’s Excellent ‘Small Axe’ Anthology (2020) @smallaxeseries.

Both Were Produced In The Wake of The Black Lives Matter Demonstrations And Slavery Statue Protests. Both Are More In Touch With The People And Reality Than The Sewell (aka Sewage) Report. And Both Highlight Protests Against Bad Policing (See Top of Column One, Opposite).

In 2013 McQueen Became The First Black Man To Produce A Film Which Subsequently Won Best Picture (’12 Years A Slave’)
